Buying a Used Trumpf Laser? My $180,000 TCO Lesson

We were using the same word to mean two different things. That communication failure almost threw off my entire budget. I had to reset.

CO2 vs. Fiber: The Basics Shifted

The CO2 laser during our trial runs had always consumed a lot of power, and the beam delivery mirrors needed frequent alignment. I looked into it—those are typically 40W to 100W CO2 lasers, retailing around $3,000 to $8,000. Sure, it's a different application. But the same logic applies: a cheap machine that can't run consistently is a money pit. We skipped that idea; for $8,000 I could lease a proper industrial marker that doesn't catch fabric on fire.

That detour made me realize how easy it is to get distracted by shiny low-cost alternatives. The fundamentals haven't changed—you need a machine that fits your workload and holds its value. But the execution of laser technology has transformed completely.

Making the Call

I went back to our management team with the TCO analysis. We approved the new Trumpf fiber laser, even though it blew the initial budget by $28,000. We financed part of it. The sales rep confirmed everything in writing, no surprises.

It's been eleven months now. Energy bills on the laser side dropped by over 40%. Cutting speeds are roughly double on thin sheet. There's something satisfying about watching a new system hum along without the smell of burning mirrors. Worth every penny.

What I'd Tell Other Buyers

Bottom line: don't buy a used laser before you do the math. And when you do the math, include energy, consumables, downtime, and the cost of twice explaining what "used" means.

Based on public listings from Machinery Trader and supplier quotes from January 2025, a used Trumpf CO2 laser can range from $85,000 to $220,000, while used fiber lasers are closer to $130,000–$300,000. But that's just the purchase price. The real number is the five-year TCO, and that will tell you a different story.

Industry is evolving. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. In our shop, the move to fiber wasn't just a cost decision—it was a survival move.
