If you're shopping for used Trumpf machines, you already know they're not cheap. They're also not simple. And the first time you buy one without a real checklist, you'll understand why people pay a premium for dealer-certified equipment.
I'm not here to sell you anything. I've been responsible for equipment purchases at a mid-size sheet metal shop for about eight years. In that time, I've personally approved and financed—let me count—14 significant mistakes? Maybe 12, I'd have to check. Somewhere around enough to cost us $40,000 in rework, rushed shipping, and lost production days. So I built a checklist. This is the version I wish someone had handed me before the first purchase.
Who This Checklist Is For
This checklist is for two kinds of situations:
- You're comparing used Trumpf machines for cutting or bending: a TruLaser, TruLaser Tube, TruBend press brake, or a TruMark marking laser.
- You're expanding into additive manufacturing and you've seen a TruPrint 2000 price that looks too good to pass up.

The 7-Point Used Trumpf Machine Checklist
This isn't in any particular order, but every point comes from a real mistake. At least, every point comes from a mistake I've either made myself or watched a supplier make on my dollar. Let's go.
1. Verify the actual hours, not the year
2019 model sounds reassuring. Only used for light production sounds even better. But the year doesn't cut parts—the laser and motion system do. Get the controller readout. For a used laser cutting machine, ask for total laser hours and total cutting hours. They're different things.
I once approved a machine with 22,000 laser hours because the exterior was spotless. The beam source failed within six months. That replacement quote was close to $9,000 in labor and parts. The seller's answer of 'we don't track hours' should have been my red flag.
2. Confirm service history with someone who isn't the seller
Used Trumpf machines are precision tools. They need a paper trail. Ask the seller for maintenance records, then call a qualified service provider to verify them. If the serial number is in their system, great. If the seller hesitates to share the serial number, walk away.
I know this feels awkward. The seller thought I didn't trust him. I didn't, and I was right not to. A machine with gaps in its service history is a gamble, even if it's a Trumpf.
3. Run a test piece in your material, not theirs
For a fiber laser metal cutting machine, the machine might cut 20 mm stainless steel beautifully. But you run 3 mm aluminum with a protective film. Different machine setup. So bring your actual material and ask for a sample cut at your typical thickness and speed.
Check the edge quality. Look for dross on the bottom, wavy edges, or signs of excessive heat. I've seen a used machine pass a clean cut test on 10 mm mild steel and then completely fail on the caller's 1 mm sheet because the focus and gas setup were wrong. That wasn't necessarily a machine problem, but it was a deal problem.
For marking lasers, bring your part and your part number. Mark it at the cycle time you need. Then take it back and measure it. If you can't measure the mark, you don't have a process.
4. Compare the right laser for the job
This is the part that trips up people who are new to laser equipment. A 60W MOPA fiber laser machine is a capable, affordable marking tool. But it's not the same category as a high-end marking laser from Trumpf. It's also possible a high-end Trumpf laser is overkill for simple black marks on aluminum. The mistake I made? I compared wattage and price without comparing the actual requirements of the job.
Define your requirements before you look at any machine:
- Minimum line thickness or character height
- Mark depth, if it needs to survive after anodizing or coating
- Cycle time per part
- Production volume per hour
- Software and network integration
Once you have those numbers, compare the 60W MOPA machine and the used Trumpf machine honestly. Sometimes the MOPA is enough. Sometimes it isn't. The checklist just forces you to answer the question before spending money.
5. Get the full price, including everything your quote left out
I saw a TruPrint 2000 price quote that was about 20% below the next quote. I was excited. Then I asked about installation and commissioning. The price didn't include the powder handling upgrade, the inert gas supply, the training days, or the warranty extension. In the end, the cheaper machine cost about the same as the more expensive one—and I lost a week waiting for a callback.
The same applies to used Trumpf machines. Ask for:
- Rigging and transport
- Crane rental
- Electrical installation
- Compressed air and gas hookups
- Extraction and filtration
- Calibration and test cuts
- Training for two or three operators
- Warranty period and terms
If the seller says they will send you a quote, ask for it in writing. A verbal price isn't a price. It's a starting point.
6. Look inside the control cabinet and around the cooling system
This gets into technical territory that isn't my expertise. I'm not an electrical engineer or a laser technician. But I've learned to look anyway. If the seller won't open the control cabinet, that tells you something.
I look for:
- Corrosion or water stains on the cabinet floor
- Dust so thick that it could insulate components
- Coolant leaks around hoses and fittings
- Unfinished wiring from previous modifications
None of these are impossible to fix. But they tell you how the previous owner treated the machine. And in my experience, a machine with a dirty cabinet has other problems hiding too. According to ANSI Z136.1, a facility with Class 4 lasers should also have a designated Laser Safety Officer. If you're bringing a used Trumpf laser into your shop, budget for that review.
7. Budget for the machine to not be turnkey
Even a well-maintained used Trumpf machine will need something in the first six months. Maybe it's a new nozzle, a new lens, a focus module, or a software license. Maybe it's a service trip that takes a day instead of an hour.
A good rule of thumb I use now: take the purchase price and add 15-20% for installation and early repairs. If the machine is dealer-certified with a warranty, you might not need all of that. If you're buying from a seller who says it ran when we shut it down, assume you'll need more.
Common Mistakes to Avoid (I Made All of These)
Trusting the hours reading on the screen
Laser hours can be reset or artificially manipulated—I don't know the mechanics of how people do it, and I'm not going to give ideas. Just know that a low reading on the screen is not proof. The maintenance records and the condition of the consumables are better evidence.
Skipping the software check
Trumpf machines run on proprietary software. Some versions are no longer supported. Some licenses are tied to the original owner. Ask about software version, transferability, and support status. A machine that is mechanically perfect but has no software support can be a virtual brick.
Not planning for the first test run
When the machine finally arrives, you should have materials, a program, and machine time ready. The worst mistake is paying a rigger to bolt down the machine, then waiting three weeks to test it. The clock is ticking before the warranty ends. Schedule the test within the first week.
There's something satisfying about seeing a used machine cut your part correctly on the third day in your facility. After all the paperwork and worry, that's the reward. But it only happens if you do the earlier steps. It only happens if you check first.
Bottom line: five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. I've learned that the hard way—more times than I'd like to admit. If this checklist helps you avoid one mistake, it's worth more than any price discount you'll negotiate.
